Ticked off!

I am beginning to get a little ticked off the way the senior gay population is so much ignored. If it had not been for those of us who braved ridicule, shame and sometimes even jail, the gay community would not be as far along as it is. Yes, there is still a long way to go, but I never thought I would live to see a gay character being portrayed on TV or in the movies. I remember in the 60s, I believe it was, when "Making Love" came out with Michael Ontkean, Harry Hamlin and when they kissed on the big screen, the cries of derision and ugly snickers filled the movie house until no one could hear the rest of the dialog. Even today, there are still are some who snicker and make unruly noises whenever two men or two women kiss. But let's face it, we are not going away!

Yet, within our own community, there are those same snickers and ugly outcries when the older gay population show open affection to each other. We see an older couple (man and woman) holding hands when walking down the street, or exchanging a kiss on a park bench and most people think or say, "How sweet!" But let two men or two women who are older do the same thing and even the younger members of our community turn away in embarrassment or even disgust.

Is it possible, just possible that they are being reminded of their own approaching older age?

Just thinking out loud - making no pronouncements.
